Speaking part in the IELTS test is designed to test your ability to express yourself fluently and use appropriate vocabulary for each part of this task. In this article I am going to discuss the main topics of the IELTS Speaking part 2.

 In IELTS speaking part 2 test you are given one clue card (you cannot choose or change the topic) and you have to speak about the topic, using the bullet points to guide you, for approximately two minutes.

There are several tips that can help you to improve your speaking during this test: 

  • Practise speaking cards before your test with your colleague/friend or individually
  • Try to familiarise yourself with the main topics
  • Try to show confidence even if you are nervous
  • Listen to the questions carefully
  • Ask examiner to repeat the question if you need to
  • Add additional information to the given answers
  • Use a range of grammar tenses in your task
  • Don't give one word answers

You should say:

You should say:

  • how it affects people’s lives

and say why you like it so much.


Describe a situation where you had to communicate in a foreign language for the first time.

You should say:

  • when and where it happened

  • how convenient it is
